The One Lawndale Children's Discovery Center, guided by the North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council (NLCCC), is being developed to offer a historic opportunity to transform early childhood education and health on Chicago's West Side. The Center will be a vibrant, welcoming space for children to explore, play, create, learn and engage with parents, caregivers and each other. Rooted in the Lawndale community, Lawndale Children's Discovery Center's mission is to provide social emotional learning and engagement experiences for children and their families.The President & CEO of the One Lawndale Children's Discovery Center is responsible for day-to-day operations and the successful pursuit of the museum's financial goals, strategic objectives and mission to provide a hands-on, "play and learn" environment that engages and motivates children to use their curiosity and creativity to learn about the wonders of our world and engages the caregivers who bring them.Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred in education, business or other related field; a minimum three years of experience directing business and program activities is required, preferably for a non-profit organization;
  • Strong management background with proven success developing innovative programming, and enhancing fundraising events; strong operations management skills;
  • Significant experience with cultivating community relationships;
  • Proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience;
  • Ability to coach staff, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget;
  • Developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth;
  • Experience working successfully with donors, community leaders and Board members to financially strengthen an institution; measurable success increasing earned and contributed revenue; strong understanding of financial management practices;
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to not-for-profit planning;
  • Strong marketing and public relations experience;
  • Customer-focused, hospitable personality;
  • A delegator who sets high expectations, values follow-through and recognizes accomplishments; a person that others want to work for.Individuals with deep roots on Chicago's west side communities are encouraged to apply. Bi-lingual applicants preferred.Job Responsibilities:Leadership and Management
  • Provide management of all administrative operations prior to opening.
  • Hire, train, supervise, develop and evaluate staff, ensuring that staffing meets the museum's needs; ensure policies and procedures are consistently implemented.
  • Lead, inspire and mentor staff toward pursuing museum goals by cultivating a work environment and culture that encourages retention of qualified staff.
  • Contribute to creation of the museum's strategic plan and engage staff and volunteers toward accomplishment of plan objectives.
  • Coordinate and provide oversight for security and safety for the facility, staff, volunteers and guests.
  • Manage museum financial operations; ensure strong controls are in place and monitor compliance; produce all necessary materials for the annual audit in conjunction with the Bookkeeper and accounting team.
  • Maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors: serve as ex-officio member of each committee, seek and build board involvement.
  • Supply the Board of Directors with complete, accurate and timely reports and data required for informed decisions; proactively bring recommendations to the Board in matters related to objectives, policies and strategy.
  • Identify and help recruit new Board members whose talents, interests and commitment will help to advance the museum's mission and programs.
  • Actively seek opportunities to publicly advocate for the museum; serve as museum spokesperson.Exhibits and Programming
  • Provide direction for the development of outreach and educational programs; leverage the galleries in ways that deepen guests' experience.
  • In conjunction with the Facilities Coordinator, maintain museum exhibits, facility and grounds.
  • Work collaboratively with other museums and attractions, thought-leaders in the field, schools, universities, volunteers and community members to strengthen programming and exhibits.Contributed and Earned Income Management
  • Work with the Founder and Board to drive annual fundraising.
  • Research and apply for grant opportunities and contributions from foundations, businesses, government entities; strengthen fundraising systems, workflows and donor recognition.
  • Cultivate relationships with individual contributors.
  • Monitor grant compliance and generate necessary reports.
  • Create an endowment, enabling the museum to continually upgrade exhibits, maintain the facility, and provide for financial stability as the institution matures.
